Coast to Coast (36) - Visit of Cadillac Ranch and Santa Rosa on Route 66

Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo in Texas

After our visit of Palo Duro Canyon park, back to Yellow us we lost to travel some typical residential streets of this city. I recognize that we are still attracted to visit the various American residences.

Already in Amarillo, in our coast to coast travel in the United States we resume the Historic Old Route 66 to the west, which we will not leave until Phoenix in Arizona and, later, we will resume until its end on the pier of Santa Monica, in The Angels in California.

Route 66 in this area shares routes with Interstate 40. After missing a while, this time for real, we finally managed to find the famous Amarillo exit Cadillac Ranch.

It is a place where there are half buried in the ground ten old cars of the Cadillac brand. To locate them, I indicate that you will find them on the south side of Route 66 (I 40), about 9 miles west of Amarillo.

He Cadillac Ranch It was built in 1974, following the idea and indications of Stanley Marsh, millionaire thanks to the helium industry, and owner of the dusty wheat field where said cadillacs are placed.

Marsh and The Ant Farm, an artistic collective from San Francisco, gathered used cadillacs representing the Golden age of American cars (1949 to 1963).

The 10 cars, decorated with graffiti, are half buried in the front, facing west "At the same angle as the Cheops pyramids". This place, whose access is free, has gained much fame, and on the ground you will see a multitude of cans of graffiti paint. It has been an experience let's say "funny."

We ate en route in a Dairy queen, establishment served exclusively by ladies of a certain age, all very friendly.

We continue our route and upon reaching Santa Rosa, we tour the town.

Santa Rosa It is mainly a place of passage and rest. The population is small and has about 500 resident inhabitants. There are lots of motels, hotels and restaurants, since it is a medium tourist place for being in the Route 66.

Then we also visited Santa Rosa Lake, about 10 miles from the town, a beautiful place.

After 5 days and 4 nights we have left Texas, state that we liked a lot. It occupies a great plain and in general the high economic level is noted.

Texas you get a great feeling of spaciousness, long, quiet roads, few vehicles, peace, harmony, in the environment of a beautiful and generous nature. In some areas of the route you can see oil extractor pumps, which channel it to pipes that lead to storage tanks.

As little anecdote of the day, in the museum shop of Palo Duro Canyon A lady has hit a beastly scream at the thought that she had interposed herself in a photo I was taking. He has apologized a lot, a lot. While I told her not to worry, that nothing was wrong, that I would take another picture.

Her husband told her that with that scream there was scared everybody, which was true: we were scared to death.

Today we have covered the first 3,000 miles (4,827 kilometers) of our trip. Great day, of course, sunny, hot, but nice.
